DONBURI ICHIYA LIVING WORLD - ALAM SUTERA

I am still in a phase where I still can't move on from my Japan trip, and the only salvation that's possible to impose is the Japanese food in Jakarta, even though it's hard to compare with the authentic Japanese food, I still find some restaurants in Jakarta actually serve good Japanese food.

Talking about Japanese food, what are you? Are you a sushi guy? Ramen guy? Rice bowl guy? Or basically every Japanese food guy? Recently I visited the newly opened Donburi Ichiya in Living World Alam Sutera, this is their second outlet (and as this post is written) that has been operating for three weeks. If you've been to their outlet in Lippo Mall Puri then you must be familiar with their main menu: rice bowl. Besides the set menus, what I love about their system is that you can customize your rice by putting every topping, meat, condiments and sauce as much & crazy as you want. Your bowl, your way.

Comparing to the one in Lippo Mal Puri, their Living World’s outlet is slightly smaller, but in sense more homey & better fit. If you’re a first timer when it comes to Donburi Ichiya, their order system is pretty much queuing order, almost canteen style (or those like Marugame Udon, Publik Markette, etc) where you start your way from a point, order and head to the cashier to proceed with the payment (FYI they accept cash only).

Open kitchen for customers’ eyes only!
Four easy steps in ordering (or customizing) your rice bowls (donburi):
1. Choose the bowl (mini or regular)
2. Choose the donburi (they have salmon aburi don, karaage don, yakitori don & gyu don)
3. Choose the sauce (garlic butter, soy honey, regular mayo, spicy mayo, wasabi mayo &  black pepper), a charge of IDR 4,545 will be applied for extra sauce
4. Choose the toppings (melted cheese, kimchi, tamago yaki, onsen tamago & japanese curry)
They currently have twelve default menus that the customers can choose to easen up the confusing choosing (when you think everything’s too good), four options are the more simple one like Gyu Don, Yakitori Don, Aburi Salmon Don & Karaage Don, and the other eight was the more appetizing & advanced looking, btw I had four of them! Generally they were tasty and I highly recommend you to add in the garlic butter as it enhances the flavor (giving that beautiful salty & garlicky flavor) and give that extra fragrance to your dish. If you love cheese & a little texture, then adding the melted cheese and tempura crumbs are almost mandatory!
Ontama Yakitori
IDR 42.727 (regular), IDR 38.181 (small)
You’re going to see a lot of onsen tamago in this post because I personally like it when the rice gets thicker, stickier and in a sense, creamier. If you don’t really like meat with sweet character (I don’t have any problem btw), the egg could tone it down. The chicken was marinated & seasoned & cooked beautifully without leaving the consistency to be dry.
Wasabi Mayo Aburi Salmon with Onsen Tamago
IDR 50.000 (regular), IDR 45.455 (small)
This one was one of my personal favs, I found that the more salty-savory flavor of the aburi salmon blended very well with the sweet mayonaisse sauce. The salmon itself was also cooked nicely & juicy.
Ontama Gyu Don
IDR 51.818 (regular), IDR 47.273 (small)
Their Gyu Don is one of the best sellers here: simmered beef & onion on rice, and their Ontama Gyu Don was just something more special. The beef was given generously, tender, sweet and had this appetizing smokey flavor. If you love the sweeter flavored beef, then this  might win you over.
Soy Honey Karaage with Melted Cheese
IDR 42.727 (regular), IDR 38.181 (small)
Deep fried chicken thigh cuts served on rice , glazed with soy honey sauce & topped with melted cheese! I must say this one was my pick of the day, my personal favorite! Since they’re using the chicken thigh, the meat was very tender, juicy with beautiful crispy coating, and plus they’re lovely seasoned! The cheese added the texture and that extra salty flavor which works with the sweet soy honey sauce. I am totally bias. Must order.

Deep fried tempura & fish ball
Overall, my experience with Donburi Ichiya was pretty pleasant. Must admit I liked most of their food and their fast friendly service, to cut things short: it’s an affordable heartwarming delicious treat for everyone. Congrats on the new store opening!

MOTTOMOO HAMBURG PANTAI INDAH KAPUK - JAKARTA

This will be a short review about this newly opened Japanese restaurant in Pantai Indah Kapuk named Mottomoo. I wasn’t exactly in the mood to take a lot of pictures as I went here right after I landed on the airport from Bangkok (more stories about Bangkok coming very soon!).
Mottomoo’s located align Cake-A-Boo and the recently opened Abura Soba Yamatoten, something about the place that’s quite catchy but honestly very simple, wasn’t sure if it’s the minimalist-industrial design or the cat illustration on the wall. Anyway, their concept is Japanese Hamburg house and align with that you’re going to find hamburg selections on the menu. Honestly, I would see this more like a Japanese modern fusion cuisine instead of authentic Japanese, as I saw some menus  heading towards the western side. 4 main food genres here would be: appetizers, hamburg, rice and pasta dishes.

Enough yakking, let’s move on to the food!

Tebasaki
IDR 45k

I was happy for the chicken wings as they’re beautifully cooked (very juicy and tender) and dressed in glazy caramelly soysauce, the flavor was the lovely combination of sweet, savory and garlicky. Best have when it’s hot!

Hamburg Gratin
IDR 99k

The main idea of this dish is hamburger meat cooked and presented in Gratin style. They’re using Australian Black Angus Rib Eye with NO FAT for the meat, and dressed with Bechamel Sauce and topped with Mozarella and Parmesan cheese. The meat was beautifully cooked with tender and juicy inside. Surprisingly, as I was digging in, I noticed that they also put spaghetti below the hamburg and consistency wise, the spaghetti was cooked on a good temperature, quite al-dente even though not completely.
For some reasons, aside from the generous amount of sauce, I feel like the consistency of the sauce wasn’t thick enough for my liking and in a way, I also expected the flavor to be richer and bolder, my experience was like 75% out of the full expectation, but I am not saying that it’s bad, in fact nowhere near, it just can do better.

Premium US Beef Stew
IDR 150k
I freaking love the presentation of most Japanese rice dishes, it’s just that generous amount of sauce not only make the food look prettier, but it drooled the hell outta me! Now I found that the sauce here was thicker and tastier (better seasoned) for my liking and OMG that beef stew was cooked perfectly with uber tender beef. Pairing it with a rice was in fact a genius thing to do. I wonder how would it feel if they actually put omelette into the portion. I GOT DAYUM ON MY MIND.
This time, I don’t want to conclude because I barely had a lot of their menus, but my experience was not bad, even though generally I feel like they can do better with certain things, but that’s normal, there will be positives and negatives on every visit. I like the range of the menu and the three outcomes I tried, pricing wise, I wouldn’t say that it’s exactly cheap.

Anyway, goodluck Mottomoo!

3 WISE MONKEYS SENOPATI JAKARTA

Went to this new joint in Senopati just earlier today and couldn't wait to blog about this to y'all! I've told you guys so many times how I've always loved meetings! The thing is, my kind of meeting is actually very berry casual: Casual outfit, casual conversation, maybe not always casual dining *put my shades on*.

So I was surfing Senopati, initially had some business to do in Crematology and you know (or don't know), that feeling when you see a new place and you get very excited to try it and you want to be the first people to try and blog about it before anybody else does it HAHAHA and suck on that bitches here I am! My business partner asked to meet me (FYI I am preparing something I couldn't wait to share to you all very very soon!) and he asked me to pick any restaurant, so I kinda take a little advantage (in a good way) from it and chose "3 Wise Monkeys".

Posh and minimalist!
I bet after you see the two photos above you'd be surprise that they are actually a Japanese restaurant, and this restaurant is under the same group that manages Liberica Coffee! At the first glance I thought it's going to be just another western cuisine with so so food but decent place, and along with my assumption and their anti-mainstream design, I got even more curious!
The interior of the restaurant was simple, clean, sophisticated, a little industrial but just proper without so many confusing details. For some reasons and with a little change on the design, I think they could also do a very good job as a coffee shop. They have two floors: the first floor was the non-smoking area while the second floor was the bar and the smoking area (yes they have mini bar) just in case you're curious to try their signature cocktails. For some reasons, the layout of the second floor looked more like a comfortable lounge and bar with the sofas and couches, however, the first floor could accomodate more people. In total, 3 Wise Monkeys could accomodate up to 100 people.
Love the bulbs!
Communal table or groupies HA!
The sushi bar area
The bar area on the second floor.
After that one cup of coffee I had in Crematology, I found myself still a little full and my partner wasn't really hungry, so we ordered two of their recommended dishes and share. From the quick scan of their menu, their menu was quite okay but their emphasize more on their Sushi creations - as raved by the waiters too -. I eventually opted for their Shoyu Butter Beef set (IDR 100k) and Crispy Salmon Skin Roll (IDR 40k). The set came with rice, Miso soup and Cawanmushi. I honestly think their set was worth it. The beef was very well seasoned and glazed in shoyu butter sauce, and the consistency of the beef was tender and medium well. The only downside was the fact that the beef was served cool instead of hot or warm. The rice should be better if they used the stickier type of rice and I had no problem with the lovely Cawanmushi and soup.

Crispy Salmon Skin Roll
IDR 40k
This particular dish was also good, however I was expecting more generous amount of crispy salmon skin! Aside form that, I had no issue with the texture of rice (I don't know if they're using the same kind of rice for the set menu but this one felt different and better!), the seasoning, the mayo dressing and the other condiments such as crab sticks and cucumber.

Still, on this state, I found myself a little early and premature to judge the restaurant's overall performance as I only ordered two meals and Ocha (so goddamn basic), but based on my experience, the food was quite decent and the pricing was still reasonable and affordable, they have this set that cost IDR 300k and I almost ordered that but assuming it would be more (as in portion and premium), well maybe next time!

I still need that extra factor beside my curiosity to come back and try more of their dishes. They're just opening for almost two weeks and they're still not busy, but I believe (since it's located in Senopati), they would have more visitors coming! Jakartans are very-very curious you know *smirk*.

Thanks for reading and come bring your ass here to try! kthxbye!
